Poymanzar Fm

Period:
Devonian, Silurian

Age Interval:
Upper Silurian - Middle Devonian (S2?-D2?.), C1

Province:
Central W Tajik

Type Locality and Naming

It was isolated in 1949 by S. K. Ovchinnikov.

Synonym: Poymanzarskaia suite, поймазарсКая свита

Reference section:

Lithology and Thickness

The suite has a varied lithological composition. Its thickness apparently exceeds 1500 m. It is made up of layers and lenses of clayey and siliceous shales, polymictic sandstones and siltstones, less frequently - limestones, plagio-liparites and andesites, gravelites, conglomerates. Lenses of limestone usually have several dozen meters in length and the first few meters in width, but sometimes their dimensions increase to one and a half kilometers in length and two hundred meters in width. Some of these bodies, according to D. A. Starshinov, undoubtedly lie in a secondary burial and are the product of erosion of biogenic structures that were located here.

Lithology Pattern:
Clayey sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The relationship of the suite is with more ancient...The issues concerning the independence of the Poymazar Fm and stratigraphic position is uncertain.

Upper contact

uncertain.

Regional extent

This suite is widespread in the northern part of the Zeravshano-Gissar region in the Zeravshan Range.

Age

The issues concerning the independence of the Poymazar suite, its age, and its position in the stratigraphic section of the Zeravshan-Gissar region remain unresolved. Tentatively, taking into account the data of V. R. Martyshov et al. (1965), the age of the suite is determined within broad limits - from the Upper Silurian to the Middle Devonian.
